FAQs for Accepted Students

Incoming (First Year and Transfer) students are required to fill out a Housing Questionnaire which helps us to make room assignments that are compatible with student preferences. This Questionnaire is available on-line along with the Housing/Dining Contract once a student has sent in their deposit holding their place in the class.

Instructions on how to access this information is mailed after your deposit has been received by the Office of Admissions. Room assignments are made by computer, based on the compatibility of information on the Questionnaire. Priority is given based on the date of receipt of both the Questionnaire and the Housing/Dining Contract. We request that you complete these forms as soon as possible and we stress that you be honest on the Questionnaire.

There is a 6 semester on-campus residency requirement. However, housing is guaranteed all four years.

All residence halls are co-ed, either by floor or by room/suite/apartment (same gender in room). Bathrooms are designated male or female. Approximately 70% of all University students reside on campus.

With 17 NCAA Division III sports, one USCSA (United States Ski and Snowboard Association) sport, one NCA (National Cheerleading Association) and 2 IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) sports, plus club teams and intramurals, there are plenty of opportunities to play your favorite sport. Athletic programs at AU are NCAA Division III, meaning we focus on the concept of the student-athlete. About 30% of undergraduate students play a varsity sport and about half participate in an intramural or club.

Over 80 student clubs and organizations are as diverse as our academic offerings: comprehensive athletic programs - intercollegiate and intramural; musical and dramatic groups, in which students from all Colleges participate; and a wide range of social, service, academic and cultural activities.

Students govern and organize the campus activities and changes occur each year based on student interest. The University also attracts many top speakers, theater productions and musical groups to campus. Many student life programs have won national recognition for their innovation and success.

At Alfred University we use the term "undeclared" instead of undecided. Not everyone knows what they want to do when they go to college. We are in support of a well-rounded, liberal arts education and most majors require a significant amount of liberal arts courses, not related to just one area.

Typically, it is not necessary for you to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. Alfred University encourages students to explore many different courses and disciplines. "Undeclared" may be only the beginning to your self discovery and Alfred University offers a foundation for this common situation!

Yes, students can take advantage of a wide variety of offerings. Alfred University has exchange programs with England, Germany, and Japan for students in the Colleges of Business and Liberal Arts & Sciences as well as the Inamori School of  Engineering.

The Study Abroad Office can also assist in finding other opportunities through affiliated and recommended study abroad programs. Students in the School of Art and Design can study at universities in England and Italy and students studying biomedical materials engineering science, ceramic engineering, glass science engineering or materials science and engineering have studies in England, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and New Zealand.

Yes. There is ample opportunity for campus employment with work study jobs.
