Qualification

You are considered to be an international student:

• If you are not a citizen of the United States
• If you are currently in the United States with a visa
• If you have applied for permanent residency but have not been approved

All applicants who are not US citizens or US permanent residents at the time of application are considered international applicants. If you become a US citizen or permanent resident after you’ve applied to Alfred University, you may submit documentation of this change (a copy of your Certificate of Citizenship, Certificate of Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card) to the Office of Admissions to update your citizenship status.

US citizens and permanent residents, no matter where in the world they live or go to school, are not considered international applicants but will be reviewed for admission within the context of their school cohort.

**On a case by case basis, this may be extended depending on guidance from the State Department. All other enrollment tasks and deadlines must be met.

Requirements

1. Official Transcripts

International students must submit original or certified copies of all secondary and post-secondary transcripts or records of grades to-date and showing proof of graduation. These must be prepared and authorized by the student's home institution and be accompanied by a certified English translation. Learn more about international student requirements.

International student records must be evaluated by either the World Evaluation Services organization (WES) or Education Evaluators International (EEI).

2. Essay or Personal Statement

You must submit an essay with either the Alfred University Application or Common Application.

3. Letter(s) of Recommendation

At least one letter of recommendation from a school counselor or academic instructor is required. These can be uploaded to the Common Application or sent directly to our office.

Additional recommendations from work supervisors, pastors, etc. can be very helpful.

4. Test Scores

International students are required to submit official English proficiency scores. We currently accept the following examinations:

• TOEFL-80
• IELTS-6.0
• Duolingo-100
• OAK-Grade Pre-1
• CEFR of B2

On a case-by-case basis we also consider completion of an ELS program at authorized partner ELS schools. Consult our counselors for details.

5. Certified Bank Statement

A bank statement must be provided at the time the application is submitted. An application cannot be reviewed without proof of funds. Although Alfred University provides a generous scholarship package to our accepted students we cannot always provide full funding, therefore, you will need to show that you have enough funds to cover your housing, meals, student fees, and some of your tuition. For an exact amount of what is needed please see our financial certification form. If a student has an external scholarship they must provide a letter of guarantee from the sponsor showing total yearly amount and scholarship duration (aka how many years the student will be receiving the scholarship). All terms for the scholarship must also be included as it relates to academic, immigration, or employment requirements.

6. Financial Certification Form (signed)

This form shows that a student or their financial sponsor is willing and able to cover all required educational costs and travel costs for the student to arrive to campus safely and successfully complete their degree. Please use this link to access the form or access from your application portal.

7. Copy of Your Passport's Photo Page

You must have a valid passport that shows it will be valid through the first year of a student's program. For example, if you matriculate in August 2022, the passport you provide must not expire until at least August 2023. If a student needs to defer for any reason they must provide an updated copy of passport if their passport expires prior to one-year from their new matriculation date.

8. Art Portfolio (School of Art and Design Applicants)

Applicants to the School of Art and Design are required to submit a portfolio.

The deposit holds your place as an incoming student. First Year students planning enrollment should submit the deposit as soon as they have decided to enroll at Alfred University.

Submit Evidence of Financial Support

The Department of Homeland Security requires Alfred University to verify that a student planning to study in the United States on a F-1 visa can provide financial evidence documenting sufficient funds for their student careers. To verify evidence of financial support, please submit the appropriate form below in order for the Committee on Admissions to make a decision on the application. The form is required to be submitted along with the application.

Undergrad Student Certification of Finances

Additional Tasks

In addition to paying the $300 deposit in U.S. dollars and submitting your Certification of Finances, international students are required to submit the following documents and complete the following additional tasks:

1. I901 SEVIS fee payment confirmation: This is a required fee in order to book a visa interview appointment at your local US Embassy the payment can be online once you receive your I20. Use the link above to proceed with your payment.
2. Visa appointment confirmation: After a student completes their visa application and their I901 SEVIS payment they must book an appointment through their local US Embassy website.
   Find your local US Embassy
   You will receive a visa appointment date and must email the confirmation to your admissions counselor. If the date is booked beyond one-month prior to matriculation you will need to either request an emergency visa request or defer your admission to accommodate that date.
3. Activate your AU Email Address: All students have access to the University's computer network and receive an Alfred University email account. The first step after depositing is to set-up your campus email account. All AU communications will be sent to your new student email address so be sure you have access to check it often or setup to get mobile notifications.
   Please Note: it can take up to 24 hours after activation for your account to be fully available on all services. If you can't sign in right away, please wait 24 hours and try again.
4. Submit Required Health Forms: Alfred University has a Health & Wellness Center right on campus. Learn more about the required Health Forms, Health Insurance and Immunizations needed before enrolling as a student.
5. Complete your Financial Responsibility Agreement - This is a different form than the Financial Certification, and unlike the certification form, this is completed by you, not your sponsor. This form is an electronic signature that accepts financial responsibility for the coursework you’ll receive at Alfred University. This form is separate from financial aid. Follow these steps to complete the form:
   1. Click “Enter Secure Area” to sign-in to Bannerweb using your Student ID (A00…)
   2. Click “Student Services” then click “Look Up Classes”
   3. Choose “Fall 2022” in the drop-down menu and click “Submit”
   4. Read and accept the financial responsibility agreement – make sure to click “Submit”!
   5. You’re done!
6. Registering for Classes: Once you’ve completed the Financial Responsibility Agreement, the Center for Advising staff will build your class schedule. You’ll have a chance to ask questions about or make changes to your class schedule during orientation. If you have questions before orientation, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’re here to help!
7. Residence Life & Housing: Alfred University offers students several distinct living styles and communities. All new student residence halls are co-ed by floor. In addition, 5 living learning communities are available for students to choose from. Check your email or portal at the beginning May for fall students and beginning of December for spring students with instructions on how to sign up!
8. Submit Required Transcripts AP/College Credit-If you've taken AP or IB courses or earned college credits, please request to have official score reports and transcripts sent to the Registrar's Office in order for courses to be evaluated for credit. First time college students also need to have a final high school transcript sent to the Registrar’s Office as soon as you graduate.
9. Visit our Campus Virtually! There are several virtual open house events for each semester. Be sure to sign up for one of these events and you could qualify for a visit grant of $1000 that will be credited towards your tuition upon arrival.
10. Attend Immigration Seminar & Pre-Arrival Orientation: These are mandatory sessions for incoming international students and an opportunity for our counselors to help you navigate two very difficult processes-Immigration and Relocation. You will learn about how to apply for your visa, some ideas of how to overcome some of the more typical denial obstacles, learn how to request additional support from our immigration team, which airports to arrive at and important documentation to bring for border crossing, how to pre-order some essential items for your dorm so you do not have to bring extra baggage, and important dates for arrival and airport shuttles options. Our counselors are always willing to help students with additional questions but we have provided these two events to ensure that you can ask questions live and maybe meet some of your fellow incoming international students. Dates for these events are fixed (see below).
    1. For students matriculating in fall semesters the date are: Immigration Overview-May 15 (you must be deposited by this date to access this meeting), Pre-Arrival Orientation July 22 (you must have completed the I901 SEVIS fee payment and booked a visa appointment to attend this session).
    2. For students matriculating in spring semesters the dates are: Immigration overview-November 15 (you must be deposited by this date to access this meeting), Pre-Arrival Orientation November 20 (you must have completed the I901 SEVIS fee payment and booked a visa appointment to attend this session).
