Director of Glass Research at Corning Incorporated to present 2023 Scholes Lecture at Alfred University

Alfred University alumnus Jeffrey T. Kohli, director of glass research at Corning Incorporated, will deliver the annual Scholes Lecture at Alfred University, on Thursday, April 6, at 11:20 a.m. in Holmes Auditorium, Harder Hall.

Kohli earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ceramic engineering, in 1986, and 1987, respectively, and a doctoral degree in glass science in 1991, all from Alfred University. In his lecture, titled “Invention, Innovation, and Industrialization,” he will discuss Corning’s long history in the field of glass and ceramic science and the role its research has played in the development of groundbreaking innovations and products.

“For more than 170 years, Corning has combined its unparalleled expertise in glass science, ceramics science, and optical physics with deep manufacturing and engineering capabilities to develop life-changing innovations and products,” Kohli states in the abstract for his talk. “Exploration, invention, innovation, fundamental understanding, problem solving, optimization, scale-up, continuous improvement, transformational change, as well as market understanding are all important aspects of a successful and enduring technical, industrial institution, like Corning.”

Prior to his current role as director of glass research of Glass Research at Corning Incorporated, Kohli was Business Technology director, Corning® Gorilla® Glass, responsible for product and process development for the Gorilla Glass business. He joined Corning in 1991 and has since worked in research, development, engineering and commercial-technology roles as a scientist, a project manager and organizational leader. He won the Science & Technology People Development Award at Corning in 2017.

Kohli is a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), has been a member of ACerS since 1986, and is past chair of the Glass and Optical Materials division of ACerS (2004). He has served on the Ceramic & Glass Industry Foundation Board of Trustees and became a member of the advisory board of the Cornell Center for Materials Research in 2021. He has more than 20 publications, including book chapters, technical articles and proceedings, and holds more than 30 U.S. patents.
