Alfred University MFA student Rose Schreiber will present a paper, “Your Boasted Liberty: American History and Public Memory in a Contemporary Bust of George Washington,” at the upcoming College Art Association Conference, in New York City.

Alfred University MFA student Rose Schreiber will present a paper, “Your Boasted Liberty: American History and Public Memory in a Contemporary Bust of George Washington,” at the upcoming College Art Association Conference, in New York City, as part of a panel, “Objects that Remember a Past Forgotten.”

Schreiber’s paper examines the work of contemporary artist Bri Murphy, examining specifically Murphy’s 3D printed ceramic bust of Washington and the ways in which the bust reflects contentious, longstanding political struggles over public memory, race, and the telling the American history.

Murphy’s rendition of Washington is based on the 1795 portrait bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
