Associate Professor of Ceramics Matt Kelleher completes residency at STARworks

Matt Kelleher, Alfred University associate professor of Ceramics, recently completed a residency workshop at STARworks, an arts-centered work community in Central Park, NC, that promotes community and economic development by providing outstanding artistic educational programs and business ventures. STARworks Ceramics has been researching local, North Carolina clay materials since 2005.

As a STARwords resident artist, Kelleher taught a workshop called “Using Molds to Begin a Conversation.” The workshop included a survey of using slabs pressed into and around different types of molds: plaster, bisque, and found molds. Kelleher’s workshop explored further how molds are a means to a beginning rather than an end.

Kelleher joined the Alfred University faculty in 2025. He received his MFA in Ceramics from the University Nebraska-Lincoln, his MA in Printmaking from the University Northern Iowa, and his BFA in Ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute. His work has been displayed in many venues, and he has held numerous artist’s residences, including at the Penland School of Crafts.
